Basketball Legend Bill Walton Dies at 71

Two-Time NBA Champion and UCLA Bruins Star

A Colorful Personality and Grateful Dead Fan

Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton, one of the sport's most charismatic personalities, has passed away at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. Walton, a redheaded hippie and devoted Grateful Dead fan, starred for John Wooden's UCLA Bruins before becoming a Hall of Famer in the NBA.

Born in La Mesa, California, Walton led UCLA to two national championships in 1972 and 1973. He was known for his versatile play, earning the nickname "Big Red" for his fiery personality and long, flowing hair.

After graduating from UCLA, Walton was selected No. 1 overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 NBA Draft. He went on to win two NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in 1986 and 1987.

Walton battled injuries throughout his career, but his unique style and infectious personality made him a fan favorite. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

In recent years, Walton worked as an NBA analyst for ESPN and the Pac-12 Network. He was also known for his philanthropy, supporting various charities and educational initiatives.

Bill Walton's passing is a profound loss for the basketball community and beyond. His impact on the game, both on and off the court, will be remembered for generations to come.
